Quarantine
The planners put the community in quarantine yesterday due to scabies. No guests at the New Years eve party. No January visitor group. No one can guest, unless they treat for parasites with the rest of the community.
The last time we (Twin Oaks) got it was 16 years ago, well before i lived here. And after that outbreak we added a question to the interview process that asked if prospective members would treat for parasites if directed to by the health team. We will have to in the coming weeks.
The thing which is bothering me is that the information about their transmission out there seems to be just wrong. The CDC sez:
The microscopic scabies mite almost always is passed by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person who already is infested
But this is not how people seem to be getting it here, with brief garment sharing being enuf to move these scary beasts forward.

Perhaps the commie laundry crew could try a different method of washing and drying clothes? Maybe CC could stop taking off-the-farm donations for a while?
Just looking at this photo gives me the “maybies” and make me itch.
I’m so glad I made other plans for New Years this year! I think it would have been year number 8, and 7th cooking. Hope you have a nice New Years, and I’m sure some people on the farm are relieved…
Yeah, usually you need to wash stuff in hot water and dry things in a hot dryer to prevent the spread of parasites. We don’t do that, so CC is a gorgeous infection vector.
the commune could keep an epidemiologist busy for a long time. I wouldn’t worry too much about how things are “supposed” to spread… those guidelines are assuming people shower daily, wash their clothes with hot water (as Angie brought up), don’t participate in cuddle piles, etc. What a bummer for you guys though. Good luck with your eradication efforts!
Scabies is a skin condition caused by infection with scabies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei). Scabies mites are microscopic parasite organisms that burrow deep inside the skin, causing inflammation, itching and rash. Later symptoms of scabies are: crusty aspect of the skin, pustules, blisters and nodules. Most of the symptoms generated by scabies are actually allergic reactions to the mites’ eggs and feces which are toxic to the human body. Skin rash is the first symptom to occur when suffering from scabies, emerging after only a few days from contamination with the parasite mites. Scabies rash is very persistent and it can last for up to several weeks or months after the mite infestation has been eradicated.,
