The New Magic Words

During his recent visit Tobias and i took a sauna at the lovely facility we have at Twin Oaks.   During one of the cooling rounds we were on the dock together and Tobias decided i should go in the freezing pond to experience it.  He came over and started lifting me up and moving me towards the edge of the dock.  I said no a couple of times and this did not slow him down.  Finally, slightly frustrated i said

You don’t have consent

And he stopped.  And i realized that this has attained, at least in the progressive/radical culture that i live in, the highest level of meaning.  I was quite pleased by this.

As someone who was once a frequent visitor to TO and other IC’s, I find it interesting that even in the radical progressive culture that is Twin Oaks and the wider IC world, a simple “no” does not suffice any more than in the mass culture.

What does that say about the strength of mass culture pathologies, and why was it necessary to invent new language to ‘solve’ the problem within the IC world? Would it not have been more effective to work on the dynamics that make “no” inadequate?

The men’s movement of the 1990’s SHOULD have addressed this issue and made inroads into changing the attitudes that make “no” insufficient, but the men’s movement failed to reach a mass audience, and devolved into silliness, for the most part, instead of helping men grow into a responsible, mature sense of masculinity. It appears that the radical-progressive culture still has some work to do in this area as well.

    Interesting. Thanks for posting!

      Dearest Kip:

It is certainly the case that the men’s movement and radical/progressive culture have a lot of work to do. And i agree that i would like a simple “no” to have worked.

I have not done enuf work with the men’s movement to be able to evaluate if they have devolved into silliness, but i will take your word for it. The place where it feels to me like the most work is needed is on male relationships with women and interracial stuff.
