Globalized Holidays
Even our little cottage industry hammocks business is effected by the moods and schedules of the global economy. One of my bigger jobs is being one of the general managers of the communities hammocks business (with my full moon tree climbing buddy Shal).
One small part of that job is buying stands for our hammocks from China. We are in a bit of a pinch for stands right now, having done better at the trade show than we suspected (a high class problem i know). So we are in communication with various vendors in China who are telling us that near term production or shipments will be delayed by Chinese New Years (Jan 28 thru Feb 8th).
This amused me. I liked the idea that product was down in China fro an entire week for this holiday. Much more civilized than our Monday holiday system. And yet somehow the Chinese seem to stay competitive.
FWIW, I am sure the Chinese use of child labor and their general disregard for worker’s rights enables them to stay competitive.
Dorris Lessing wrote a wonderful story. Shikasta? In it, a character gives thanks that it is the Chinese and not the Americans who have become the overlords of earth.
